Foreign plant species, such as Mile-a-Minute, Japanese Knotweed and Barberry, Ailanthus, and Oriental Bittersweet, among others, are displacing native species. Our work with watershed associations, PA Game Commission, DCNR Bureau of Forestry and Parks, and the National Park Service has effectively controlled monocultures in forested areas and along roadsides and watercourses where invasives were choking out plant species native to Pennsylvania.
These photos are from the website invasive.org where detailed descriptions of each invader are listed along with more photos to help you identify problem plants. This photo (right) of Ailanthus or Tree of Heaven was taken by Chuck Bargeron. Below is Japanese Barberry in autumn leaf and fruit (photo by Chris Evans). The banner photo above shows a small stream overtaken by Japanese Knotweed (photo by Tanya Meyer).
